Web Video Stays Ice ColdAuthor: Net Economy, The
LAS VEGAS — The National Association of Broadcasters' yearly convention here is a rare moment for the Web-video world. Here the ideas of multicasting, program listings and targeted ad insertion are not bizarre topics that must be carefully explained to network operators. They are the core concepts that broadcasters have built into their businesses on for decades. But in spite of the different atmosphere, the news was not good. "What a lot of people forget is, in order to have anything like multi-channel video, about 100 megabits per second is needed to the home," says Doug Mohney of Vegas Commando, a consulting and marketing firm, who tracks Web-video trends. He continued, while speaking on a panel, "Phone companies and cable companies are fighting to get people signed up for just 1 to 10 megabits — until we solve that, video will never fulfill its promise." ...
